Deck Soul Control - Review

Soul Inspired@ Moso Moso Saturday 15th November 2008

Review: Marina

The day had finally arrived, The Mighty Soul Control were playing out again!!! There’s been nothing but constant talk about the boys since DJ Case’s and The Twins Birthday Ball…..OMG!!!!
The tickets were sold-out for this event so you knew you were in for a good night!!! It was a very cold night, but not as cold as last Saturday in Southport!! T2 Bad was right about having to thaw out and the mountaineering dress wear that everyone had to adopt. If I hadn't been in Southport from the Friday night which wasn’t as cold, I could have been forgiven for thinking I was at an Arctic survival camp!!

On arrival at Moso around 12:45am the queue was very long. My niece came from Leeds and had arrived a long time before me and couldn't believe the queue outside, so she rang to tell me to hurry up!!!

Once inside we had to squeeze through the capacity crowd so we decided to go upstairs where at least there was some space in the Soulful House Arena. It seemed as if most of the people in this Arena were mainly there for the bar, but the waiting time was at least half-an-hour to be served!!! They were playing some good Soulful House which had a fair few of people dancing away, but downstairs is where everyone wanted to be, so we braved the throngs and headed into the main Soul Control Arena to see what lay in store for us!!! The atmosphere was amazing!!! The crowd were in full swing with people celebrating birthdays (big shout out to them) singing along to their favourite tunes and blowing horns and whistles which is the Soul Control way!!!

The Bass from Soul Control’s legendary PA System wasn’t as loud and powerful as it was at DJ Case and The Twins Birthday Ball, but it was still enough to make my knees tremble!! The tunes that were played were mostly well known tracks from back in the day. The crowd were in their element, but that's not to say that some people weren't enjoying themselves!! The Soul Inspired Arena was way too full and there was a different crowd and atmosphere compared to the birthday bash which I suppose is understandable because this was a full on paid event.

The waiting time at the bar downstairs was again up to half-an-hour and wasn’t helped by the fact the staff were writing down peoples drinks orders and shoving calculators in their faces with the price to pay!! It just created problems as there was no proper queuing system which wound people up!!! The manager should have known from the last event that there were going to be unique demands on the bar and he should have staffed it accordingly!!! What I didn’t get was why were there staff standing outside the toilets when they were needed at the bars? The Moso Moso bar staff situation was ridiculous, but I have it on good authority that Moso have been told in no uncertain terms from Soul Control that never again will understaffed bars and the way they were operated be tolerated!!! And when Soul Control says something, they mean business!!!

I don’t think the management realised that Soul Control were playing otherwise they would have known what to expect!!! The bar and the fact the Soul Control Arena was too full because the entire Soulful House crowd abandoned their Arena to witness the Soul Control experience was a major let-down for Soul Inspired and because of this some of the regular Soul-Heads weren’t feeling it. What a difference it would have made if the crowd were equally spread throughout Moso Moso, but is there anything that could compete with Soul Control in the same venue?

Soul Control Verdict:
Overall all the DJ’s played well considering the massive crowd. If Soul Control are to do another event over the festive period, they can rectify the failings of this night by finding another venue (MEN Arena) to fit all us Soul-Heads in, because when Soul Control play, they come larger than large… too large for a 1000 capacity venue!!!!
