The city centre was very busy in general and there were a lot of people going to and from other venues. Parking was a flippin’ nightmare as we spent the next three quarters of an hour looking for a space before we eventually got one near Portland Street!!
By the time we finally got to M2 it was 12:30am but at least the queue had died down. We went through the main entrance and into the foyer which wasn’t an impressive experience because the interior of M2 was dull and had a seriously funky smell to it!!! We thought we were in the wrong venue; the crowd were a bit young, and the place was a bit rough around the edges to say the least!!!
Anyway we paid in and went into the main entrance to the club area. The room we first came to was brightly lit with large seating areas dotted all around with a large bar to the rear. It wasn’t very busy so I just assumed this was the chill-out room, but the music being played was not what I expected to hear. I then spotted another room so we went to investigate. This room was all brightly lit like a Christmas tree because of the disco lights which were flashing all over the place and there were a few young Raver’s on the dance-floor doing what young Raver’s do.
The tunes being played in this room which I assume was the main arena was full on chart music!!! I looked at my sister and she looked at me in shock we thought……right ok!! We stayed for a while and they continued to play dance music, so went back into first room where at last they were playing a tune that I knew. By now I had sussed out the lay out of the club and what the night was all about and I wasn’t in the slightest impressed!!! We found somewhere to stand but there was this bright, colourful light shining on us, so we found somewhere a little darker to stand. I feared sitting down because I wasn’t so sure that I wouldn’t fall asleep!!!
I saw Betty, an old friend of mine and thought this is my chance to occupy myself with something interesting, so I went over to her and had a long overdue catch up. Having been stood for a while, I needed the ladies which were situated upstairs. I went through the main exit doors down a corridor and up a flight of stairs. This venue has apparently changed owners many times in the past and it’s hard to believe that no one has thought to change the carpets! I mean the carpets were that bad that as I was walking it was sticking to my shoes!!! It was like being in the The WESTERN PUB in Moss Side!!!!
Going upstairs I was thinking there must be another room because I could hear music, but on checking it out the music was being piped through from the main Dance room, so my hopes of hearing something worthwhile were ultimately dashed for the evening!!!!
Soul Control Verdict:
My time in M2 dragged painfully on!! The music was also a drag and was really up and down and by the end of the night, most people had had enough of the blindingly bright disco lights!!! The night was struggling to capture the essence of what us Soul Heads were really looking for!!!! If Soul Out are looking to do another event in M2, DON’T unless you put a hell of a lot more thought into what you’re doing!!!!
