Deck Soul Control - Review

Seductive Soul @ Cheshire Lounge Saturday 19th July 2008

Review: Macka
It was time for me and my friends to make the short trip up the M56 to Lymm for the regular Seductive Soul night at the Cheshire Lounge.
We arrived there at about 11:30pm promptly paid our money to the charming lady on the door and hit the Bar before venturing downstairs to the main room to see what was happening.

The place was very busy with everyone spread out between the upstairs bar area, the outside area and downstairs where the dance-floor is. On going downstairs the first thing I noticed was the fact that there was no bass at all in the sound system it was totally flat with no depth what so ever!!

Soul Control - Seductive Soul

Assuming this was a temporary glitch we went back upstairs to the outside area for a smoke (yeah, I know I should give up!) where I bumped into T2 Bad who had just arrived. There almost seemed to be more people in the outside area than downstairs! – Perhaps this was due to the warm, dry conditions and the fact that there are speakers outside which is good for us smokers as we can still hear what is being played.

After being at Seductive Soul for over an hour I must say how disappointed I was at how up and down the music was. The DJ playing at this point was Carlton Soul who I haven’t heard play before, but for me he was playing far too many obscure down tempo tracks and people were struggling to get into the groove on the dance floor which may also explain why so many people were mingling around upstairs and outside. The situation didn’t improve much either when the next guest DJ Sean Livesey came on, he continued with a set that was also all over the place!! Every time a tune came on that we all know and love, for example Mary J Blige’s ‘Be Happy’ he would follow it up with a tune that no one knew, hence the up and down feel to the night.

Don’t get me wrong I like DJ’s who dare to be a bit different, but at the same time a balance is required where you also need to play to the crowd and give them what they want and expect. Everyone I spoke to during the night said the same – “what’s going on with the music tonight?” By this point I had given up on downstairs and spent most of the night mingling and chatting to friends old and new upstairs and outside!

Jim Hargreaves came on at about 2:30pm for the last half hour and finally turned it round playing all the usual floor fillers we know e.g. Jaheim’s ‘Just in Case’ and such like, and with about 20 minutes to go till home time the speakers miraculously came to life and the bass finally kicked in!!! – But for me this was too little far too late, it’s not good when the speakers in the outside area sound much better than the ones in the main room down stairs where the DJ and the dance floor are!

Soul Control Verdict:
Seductive Soul was a frustrating affair in many respects!! The venue was very busy with the Seductive Soul faithful in full attendance and creating the friendly laid back atmosphere we are used to here. But with the sound system in the main room letting the night down and the choice of music generally being quite poor in my opinion and not what we have come to expect at this night, Seductive didn’t live up to previous expectations.
