Elegance @ Moso Moso Manchester Saturday 29th March 2008

Review: Tiffany

It was the end of the month, I had money in my pocket and now all I and three friends needed was somewhere to go! There were two realistic options open to us for this well needed Saturday night release, Elegance at Moso Moso or Soul Groove at The Gateway. Moso Moso was favourite because two of my friends had been promising to go for months but had just never got round to it and I'd never been before either. The other friend had been to The Gateway before and she said that the music was more like the monthly Friday night Soul gig in Prestwich that I’ve been to previously and which isn’t really our kind of scene. So Elegance it was then!!

We got to Moso Moso at 12 midnight where we paid our entrance fees of £6 each and were warmly welcomed by the staff. The admission price was especially pleasing as the night was advertised as £10 on the door. On entering the club we were guided upstairs where we were surprised to see that there were only 15 people in there and that included us and the DJ’s!!!!! Stunned, we got a drink and sat down but were at a loss as what to do next. It was 20 minutes later that it started to dawn on us that no one else had come through the doors since we arrived even though the 2 female DJ’s kept referring to us as the “early crew”!!!!

After a brief discussion between the four of us, we decided to leave and go to The Gateway. We paid into The Gateway which was pretty packed, but the more laid back style of Soul music being played wasn’t really our thing. The main thing that we noticed about Soul Groove was the crowd, they were a weird mixture of mature Soul types and….. well…. er your typical Saturday night beer swilling lot!!! Soul Groove is held in the function suite above The Gateway Pub and by the looks of things, when the pub closes, the regulars just come upstairs to continue their night and there you have the weird mixture of people!!!

We stuck it out at The Gateway for half an hour or so before deciding to head back to Moso Moso as it was going though all our minds that the DJ’s at Elegance kept referring to us as the “early crew”!! So off we went to see if it had improved any. We arrived back at Moso Moso at 1:45am only to see to the same amount of people that were there when we left!!!! We were surprised that the club was so empty because we thought the music was pretty good and definitely more to our taste than what was on offer at The Gateway.

The two female DJs were spinning some hot tunes; the only problem was that their mixing skills were a bit off. I would definitely hire them though if I was having a party and I’m sure a bit of practice would improve their mixing!! Even though the music was good, it wasn’t enough to keep us there as we finally called it a night after 15 minutes and we all left to go to our homes.

Soul Control Verdict:

I don’t know what happened at Elegance that night, surely the promoters have got to look at the problems with the event and try to fix them. It’s a real shame too, because Moso Moso is a pretty sharp and classy venue and the admission price was reasonable, but where were the crowd???????
