The DJ’s for the night were Mikey J, Bob Hinsley, Barry Maleady alongside the main resident Mr Mike Stephens. All the DJ’s on the night played a similar set consisting of a mix of 80’s, 90’s through to brand new Soul, but unlike other venues that I attend such as the Soul Out nights in Manchester, Blackburn and Soul Grooves (The Gateway) etc that also play this era of music, the guys at TSOP delve a little bit deeper into their record boxes and play tunes that they wouldn’t normally risk at other gigs for fear of emptying the dance floor which pays testament to the more mature, discerning crowd that regularly attend here. For example during Mike Stephens’s set, instead of playing the well known and loved Deborah Cox track ‘Sentimental’ he played the much lesser known (and in my opinion much better!) track ‘One Wish’ by the same artist, which I find a very refreshing change from the norm.
Mikey J (who I haven’t heard play before) spun some quality mid-tempo tunes, followed by Mike Stephens who played the night out to the end with a quality, flawless set as we have come to expect from him. As previous reviewers of this night have mentioned, the venue itself is nothing to write home about. The Longfield Suite is pretty bland and has little style compared to some other Soul night venues such as The Cheshire Lounge or Relish, but for me substance is more important than style and this place has plenty of substance to offer – as well as reasonably priced drinks! As we all know the more upmarket the venue, the more upmarket the bar prices! So it’s a fair trade off me-thinks!!
Talking of the bar, take note that it closes at 1am, which means you will need to double or even treble up your last round unless you want to run dry for the last hour of the night as the music goes on until 2am.
Soul Control Verdict:
To sum up; As always a good night was had by all even if the attendance was a bit low which is a shame as another 50-100 revellers is all it would take to make this night the success it deserves to be!!!
